Questions for Discussion and/or Journaling:
- Are you a hard worker? Why or why not?
- What motivates you to work?
- What aspirations do you have? (What do you want to be when you grow up?)
- Will you be required to work hard to achieve these goals?
- What will it take to be successful in the field of your choice?
- Will you experience failure on the way to success?
- Have there been any failures that made your life better?
- Is there a right time to give up and stop trying? Or, should you never give up?
- Can you think of any famous people who failed spectacularly at something?
- Can you think of any famous people who have had to work hard in order to be famous?
- Have you heard of Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule? (According to Mr. Gladwell, "ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness." It takes 10,000 hours of "deliberate practice" to become world-class in any field.) His examples included:
--- Bill Gates, who was able to start coding as a teen since he attended a progressive Seattle high school.
--- The Beatles, who played eight-hour gigs in German clubs long before they performed in America. Those opportunities to practice early and often - along with precocious talent - allowed them to respectively invent software and modern rock and roll.
---Gladwell's messages included that "people aren't born geniuses, they get there through effort."
